Buyers want THIS in 2015
Buyers want technology in their homes, and they want the latest and greatest options. Those options are on display this week at the 2015 International Consumer Electronics Show (CES) in Las Vegas this week, where an entire exhibit hall is dedicated to the concept of the “smart home.” While technology that allows homeowners to view their home, control heating, air, and lights, and manage security all via their smartphone has been around for several years now, it appears that 2015 could be the year that “smart technology” truly takes over buyers’ must-have lists. Realtor Magazine predicted this week that app-enabled washers, dryers, and refrigerators will actually be in top demand this year for homeowners, making smart appliances the thing that could give you or your sellers a leg up on the competition in the coming year[1].

Of course, not everyone loves smart appliances, particularly given that they require a bit more technical support than their “dumb,” traditional counterparts. However, as energy efficiency becomes more and more important to buyers and the ability to control every aspect of the home from an app based in your mobile phone becomes increasingly appealing to younger homeowners in particular, many appliance companies are actually setting up dedicated tech support teams to manage their smart appliance lines. Companies like Bosch are also adding helpful facets to their appliances such as weather recommendations to HVAC systems, digital picture-taking to your fridge so you can check later to see if you need eggs, and washers and dryers that can be started remotely if you load them but forget to turn them on[2]. Many companies are also opting to work with other brands in order to allow consumers to fully integrate their homes’ smart features even if they do not remain loyal to a single brand.

Do you think that smart homes are on trend for 2015? Would you buy a home based on its smart features?
